Fish Head Dryer
- Large

Wet Capacity: 12 mTons in three to five days

Depending on the size, weight and condition in general, heads from demersal fish species - such as Cod (Gadus morhua), Haddock (Gadus aeglefinus) and Pollock (Pollachius virens) - will cure to desired moisture contents in 72 to 96 hours in a controlled condition of the recirculated air. Much like in air conditioning for comfort, temperatures and humidities are controlled through refrigeration; moisture is removed through cooling below respective Wet Bulb Temperatures (WBTs), followed by re-heating to the desired process temperatures.

The process does not require the goods to be removed from the process compartment for 'equalisation' and no 'after-drying' is called for. Hence; labour requirements are substantially reduced.

Below is a standard 900X900 mm frame with 0,81 sqm loading surface,125 mm high level-to-level. The process compartment shown in two 3D-drawings above has the internal dimensions of LXWXH = 9,6X4,8X3,2 m with 2,1 m headroom to a false ceiling. It accomodates 5X9 = 45 stacks of frames, each stack 16 frames high, thus totalling 720 frames in the room, adding up to 583 sqm loading area. At an average loading density of 21 kg/sqm, a total of some 12.000 kg of the wet product can be loaded into the compartment.

The refrigerating package is shown in two palm-size 3D-pictures below. Major components of the package - named in the order of the flow of refrigerant from low to high pressure - are the air cooling coil (light blue), a liquid separator (vertical pressure vessel, dark blue), the compressor-motor package (compressor dark blue, electric motor green), an oil separator (red, behind the electric switch board) and the air re-heater (condenser, red with green propeller fans). An external air cooled condenser - not shown on the pictures - rejects excess heat from the refrigerating process to the atmosphere.

This particular package will operate with Refrigerant R717 (ammonia), but it can equally well be built to operate with any other environment-friendly refrigerant.

A combined Electric Switch Board and Control Panel (green with yellow leaves) contains the starting gear and related controls for all electric motors in the package, including a small industrial computer governing temperatures and humidities of the recirculated air in the pre-programmed process.

If electric power is expensive or unreliable on the site, the plant can be powered with a diesel prime mover - a socalled RPE Unit - making it fully indepentent of other sources of energy than diesel fuel.
